Mahoukoku, Wizards, and Witches

Unbeknown to the outside world, is a secret realm, only accessible by a select few; These few, are known as Witches or Wizards, or collectively, Magic Users.

Witches and Wizards are able to manipulate the forces of magic though the use of Crystals, that they are typically born with that grow in size as they mature. Everyone is only born with one, so great care must be taken to ensure it is not lost or broken. The only way to get a new one, is for an older Magic User to break off a part of their own crystal- However, the process will weaken their overall power, and if done incorrectly, can even kill them. This process is also the only way a Convert-Apprentice can get their own Crystal.

While generally a peaceful and pacifist race, their world, as it is one that has portals connecting it to many others, has come under attack and scrutiny for many various reasons. The biggest incident, was the War of the Stones, involving the Magic Users residing on Mobotonia, getting into fights with the Mobotonian Alchemists over their use of Crystals, which the Alchemists have mistaken as Philosopher's Stones. It was this time period, where The Curse of The Magic Kitty was cast, after a powerful witch was betrayed by a close alchemist friend, and her stone was stolen. Once she got it back, and the spell was cast, any Magic User who's discovered by a mortal will be turned into a tiny house-kitten, with very little magical ability, but still able to talk. Their only hope of restoring their original bodies is to turn the mortal that discovered them into a full-level Witch, or wait until a Queen or King Candidate connected to the mortal's world can take the throne.
